• A two-year/four-semester Master’s degree after a three-year Bachelor’s degree; or

• An equivalent qualification declared by the relevant statutory regulatory body; or

Meeting the minimum academic requirement does not by itself guarantee admission because candidates must also qualify the applicable entrance/NET route, interview and merit process.

Total questions70
Duration90 minutes

A 5% relaxation, making the threshold 45%, is available for eligible SC, ST, OBC Non-Creamy Layer, differently-abled, EWS and other categories as allowed by the UGC provisions.

The entrance-test syllabus includes research methodology and the subject-specific component related to the selected Ph.D. discipline. Candidates should download the complete syllabus and study the research-methodology topics, research design, methods, data collection, academic writing and discipline-specific fundamentals described in the official brochure.

UPRTOU PhD Entrance Exemption

The brochure identifies categories of candidates who are exempted from the university entrance test, subject to the stated conditions:

• Candidates with NET and Junior Research Fellowship or an equivalent qualification.

• Candidates who have qualified only NET or an equivalent examination in the current year, where the qualification is accepted for the applicable purpose.

• Candidates who have qualified a NET or equivalent examination for Ph.D. admission in the current year.

Entrance-test exemption does not mean automatic admission. Exempted candidates must still complete the application, submit the required proof and appear for the interview/research-proposal stage. The university will use the applicable JRF, NET or equivalent score in the merit calculation.

Candidates should not claim exemption merely because they have appeared in an examination. The certificate, result status, subject match and current-year condition must satisfy the brochure.

UPRTOU PhD Selection Process 2026-27

The selection process has three broad steps:

Step 1: Entrance Test or Accepted NET/JRF Route

Candidates who are not exempted take the UPRTOU Pre-Ph.D. Entrance Test. It is qualifying in nature. Candidates who meet the cut-off proceed to the interview stage.

Eligible NET/JRF or equivalent candidates may be exempted from the university entrance test, subject to the rules and verification of their qualification.

Step 2: Research Proposal Presentation and Interview

Shortlisted candidates must prepare a research proposal in their area of interest. The proposal is submitted to the interview board, and the candidate must make a PowerPoint presentation of the tentative synopsis followed by an interview before the concerned School of Studies.

Candidates should bring original academic, category, identity and qualification documents to the interview. The proposal should clearly state the research problem, objectives, proposed methodology, expected contribution and relevant references.

Step 3: Subject-wise and Category-wise Merit List

The university prepares a 100-point merit list subject-wise and category-wise:

Merit componentMaximum points
JRF/NET/equivalent score or UPRTOU entrance-test score70
Research synopsis presentation and interview30
Total100

Admission is offered according to merit, seat availability, supervisor availability and applicable reservation rules. Clearing the entrance examination alone does not guarantee admission.

UPRTOU PhD Programme Duration

The minimum duration of the Ph.D. programme is three years, including coursework. The maximum duration is generally six years, subject to the conditions contained in the UPRTOU Ph.D. Guidelines and applicable university rules.

The programme is offered in regular mode. Each registered scholar must work under an approved university supervisor, and the research topic and supervisor allocation are decided according to the university’s research-degree process and supervisor availability.
